Fine Boat Rowing

Think of the Olympics, Dorney Lake, Henley, flat calm waters, early mornings gliding along the river ... river or fine boat rowing is what comes to mind for most people when thinking of this diverse sport.

Plymouth Amateur Rowing Club
Based on the embankment, Plymouth ARC has a thriving junior section, and is enjoying a boost to their adult section meaning that the club are well represented at local regattas - and further afield.

Offshore rowing


Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club
Although starting out as a purely offshore rowing club, Mayflower also offer their members the choice to row fine boats. The club organise the annual 'Eddystone Challenge', an endurance race which takes crews around the Eddystone Lighthouse.

Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing

Dubbed as the 'fastest growing sport in the South West', gig rowing has really taken off in the past 10 years. Clubs row in 32 foot, 6 oared, traditionally built boats. Originally used to take pilots out to ships, these boats are now used for racing, with over 60 clubs in the South West alone. Rowers can take part in weekly regattas from May through til September, starting the season in the Isles of Scilly and finishing it in Newquay with the county championships.

Cattewater Pilot Gig Club
Based at the Mount Batten Centre, Cattewater offer 'learn to row' courses in the summer months, as well as novice rowing, or the chance to compete in squads.

Caradon Gig Club
Based in Saltash, Caradon are one of the most successful gig clubs on the circuit. The club has a well developed adult section, as well as a large junior section. Novices can learn to row on a Wednesday evening throughout the summer.

Rame Gig Club
Based in Cawsand, the club have a recently refurbished clubhouse and are now able to offer an indoor rowing membership for those just wishing to use the fitness suite. Rame have an adult and junior section.

Tamar and Tavy Gig Club
Based in Bere Alston, near Tavistock, the club offer gig rowing to all with an adult and junior section. The club offer learn to row courses for novices and regularly attend 'away' events such as the London River Race.

Flashboat Rowing

Clubs affiliated to the Cornish Rowing Association row 18 foot flashboats and 15ft skiffs. The association is small but offers regular regattas throughout the season, based on a points system. These types of boats are ideal for junior development, and this shows as the majority of members are under 18s.

Saltash Rowing Club
Based at Saltash Sailing club, the club offer training throughout the spring on a Sunday, and then a weekly training night in the summer. The focus is heavily on the juniors, with the flashboat club linking closely to Caradon Gig Club.

Calstock Rowing Club
Based in Calstock, this club offer flashboat rowing throughout the year. The club holds an annual 2 day regatta which this year saw the inclusion of an Olympic style podium for prize winners.
